The War Memorial for Accrington stands at the top of Oak Hill Park in Accrington. This is an imposing monument, with sculptures by Tyson Smith.
The Memorial commemorates 855 names of those killed in the First
World War, as well as 173 names for the Second World War. There are also 2
names from the Falklands conflict and 1 from the conflict in Northern Ireland.
Amongst the names are two for soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.
Accrington is, of course, well known for the loss of the "Accrington Pals" on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme. On 1st July 1916 the 11th (Service) Battalion (Accrington) East Lancashire Regiment, better known as the Accrington Pals took part in the initial battle. In just half of an hour 235 of the battalion were killed, and a further 350 wounded, 17 of them fatally.

South Shore, Blackpool. Killed 5 October 1917. Aged 31.
Born Accrington (Lancs), Enlisted Newcastle, Resided Newcastle-on-Tyne.
