The Alnwick War Memorial

The Alnwick War Memorial stands at the junction of Denwick Lane and Bondgate Without (a very busy road junction). The Memorial consists of a column on top of which is a lamp. The column stands on a triangular base, on which stand the sculptures of a sailor and two soldiers. On the East face of the base is the dedication; on the West face is a plaque with the names of the dead from the Second World War; on the North Face is a plaque with the names of the dead from the First World War. One soldier who fell in the Korean War is commemorated on the East face.

189 names are commemorated on the plaque for the First World War. An image of this plaque suitable for transcription is shown below.

Private William Bell, 33052. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 316 Northumberland Fusiliers. Killed 22 September 1916.
Born Chevington (Acklington, Northumberland), Enlisted Alnwick.

Private Archibald Cotterill, 33686. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 20/1699 Northumberland Fusiliers. Son of the late Thomas and Sarah Cotterill. Killed 9 October 1917. Aged 19.
Born Alnwick (Northumberland), Enlisted Alnwick.

Private James Jackson. 25177. 10th Battalion the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), formerly 32813 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 21 September 1917.
Born Alnwick (Northumberland), Enlisted Newcastle-on-Tyne, Resided Heaton (Northumberland).

Private Andrew Jobson. 17469. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 26 September 1915.
Born Alnwick, Enlisted Alnwick.

Lance Serjeant William McFadden. 3/8349. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John McFadden; husband of Roseline E. McFadden, of Pottergate Place, Alnwick, Northumberland. Killed 22 August 1915. Aged 35.
Born Greenock (Refrew), Enlisted Redcar, Resided Alnwick (Northumberland).
Commemorated on Panel 55 to 58, HELLES MEMORIAL.

Private Joseph O'Brien. 29162. 8th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 46391 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 26 September 1917.
Born Alnwick, Enlisted Newcastle-on-Tyne, Resided Alnwick.

Private James Dickson Wallace. 204452. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Elizabeth Margaret Wallace, of 19, Narrowgate St., Alnwick, Northumberland, and the late Robert Wallace. Killed 4 October 1917. Aged 29.
Born Alnwick, Enlisted Newcastle.
