The Gates to St. Andrew's Church, Aysgarth. The Gates to St. Andrew's Church, Aysgarth.

The gateway leading to St. Andrew's Church, Aysgarth, is clearly a War memorial. What is curious is the fact that there are no names for 1914 and only a single name for 1915. However, there are as many names on the gateway as there are on the Memorial Plaque inside the Church. The names recorded are;-

, 32973. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Robert and Ann Fawcett, of Newbiggin, Aysgarth; husband of Elizabeth Ann Fawcett, of Stanley Cottage, Thoralby, Aysgarth, Yorks. Killed on 7 June 1917. Aged 38.
Born Aysgarth, Enlisted Leyburn, Resided Aysgarth.

(*)Private Matthew Heseltine, 20348. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed on 14 September 1916.
Born Aysgarth, Enlisted Leyburn, Resided Aysgarth.

(SDGW gives place of birth as "Thornaby". This should be "Thoralby".).

Colonel John William Lodge, 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Commanding 2nd (Home Service) Garr. Bn. Son of the late Robert and Mary Lodge, of Bishopdale, Aysgarth. Commanded 3rd Bn. in the South African Campaign. Died at home on 23 August 1917. Aged 60.
Buried AYSGARTH (ST. ANDREW) CHURCHYARD.

Private Joseph Dixon Raw MM, 30709. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of James and Mary Jane Raw, of West Burton, Aysgarth, Yorks. Killed on 8 May 1918. Aged 21.
Born Burton-on-Wolden (Yorks), Enlisted Leyburn, Resided Aysgarth.
Commemorated Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.

Private Thomas Spence, 2425. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John and Margaret Spence, of West Burton, Aysgarth. Died at home on 18 April 1919. Aged 23.
Buried AYSGARTH (ST. ANDREW) CHURCHYARD.

(*) The two Private Matthew Heseltine soldiers were cousins.
The following article from the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Examiner, dated 30 September 1918, describes an extraordiinary tale;-
"Pte. Matthew Heseltine, Yorks. Regiment, Newbiggin, Aysgarth. Wensleydale, is reported killed in action on September 16. Another Pte. Matthew Heseltine, Yorks. Regt., Thoralby, Aysgarth, Wensleydale, cousin to the first-named, is also reported killed on the 16th. Both enlisted in the same regiment on the same day, have kept together all the time, and were killed on the same day. Both were members of a family of ten, and both families consisted of four boys and six girls."
