The War Memorial for Barnard Castle is situated in the grounds of the Bowes Museum, in the South East corner of the gardens. The memorial is a column with the names of those who died in the First World War inscribed on each of its four faces. A plaque commemorating those who died in the Second World War is situated on the front of the memorial, on the steps.

125 names commemorate those who died in the First World War. Of these names, 9 are for soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment. Images of the faces on which the names are recorded, suitable for transcription, are shown below.

Private Walter Fleet. 22696. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Richard Fleet; husband of Ada Fleet, of Bridge Inn Yard, Thorngate, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. Died 27 May 1918.
Born Greatham (Durham), Enlisted Stockton-on-Tees, Resided Barnard Castle.
Commemorated SOISSONS MEMORIAL.

Serjeant John Gilmore. 8403. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 21 August 1915.
Born Barnard Castle, Enlisted Richmond, Resided Barnard Castle (Durham).
Commemorated Panel 55 to 58, HELLES MEMORIAL.

Lieutenant Colonel Austin Graham. 5th Battalion (Attached 4th Battalion) Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John and Margaret Ely Graham, of 17, Montalbo Terrace, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. Died 11 April 1918. Aged 48.
Buried HAVERSKERQUE BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private John William Hewitson, G/79999. 4th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, formerly 28397 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Robert Hewitson, of North Field, Bowes, Darlington. Killed 18 September 1918. Aged 22.
Born Bowes (Yorks), Enlisted Barnard Castle, Resided Barnard Castle.
Commemorated on Panel 3, VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL.

Private James Horan, 3/8703. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Died 2 April 1918. Aged 38.
Buried BARNARD CASTLE ROMAN CATHOLIC CEMETERY.

His bother, Frank, of the 1st/9th DLI was killed on 12 April 1916.

Private Fred Jemmeson. 38371. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 22 March 1918.
Born Marwood (Durham), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Barnard Castle.
Commemorated Panel 31 and 32, POZIERES MEMORIAL.

2nd Lieutenant Jim Stembridge. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William and Emma Stembridge; husband of Florence Stembridge, of 69, Galgate, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. Killed 29 September 1918. Aged 27.
Buried CHAPEL CORNER CEMETERY, SAUCHY-LESTREE.

Private Joseph Robert Watson. 18779. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Watson; husband of Millicent Watson, of 3, Garden Lane, Cleadon, Sunderland. Killed 19 November 1915. Aged 29.
Enlisted Barnard Castle.
Buried HILL 10 CEMETERY.

Private Joseph Pearson Wilson. 45137. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Robert Wilson, of 1, Victoria Terrace East, Barnard Castle, Co. Durham. Killed 29 September 1918. Aged 20.
Born Barnard Castle, Enlisted Newcastle, Resided Barnard Castle.
