The War Memorial in Barton village.

The Barton War Memorial stands at the edge of the village green
by the side of the old Great North Road. Barton village itself is about 5 miles
North East of Richmond, and is very close to Scotch Corner.
The Barton War Memorial is inscribed;-
"Erected Together with a Peal of Bells in the Church Tower to the Glory
of God and in Undying Memory of the Barton Men who Fell in the Great War 1914
- 1918. We Owe Them Everything."

Captain Thomas Sowerby Rowlandson, MC. 4th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Samuel and Isabel Rowlandson, of Newton Morrell,
Darlington. Killed on 15 September 1916. Aged 36.
Buried BECOURT MILITARY CEMETERY, BECORDEL-BECOURT.
Thomas Sowerby Rowlandson was born in Newton Morrell in June
1880. He was Baptised at Holy Trinity, Darlington on 21 June 1880. In the
1881 Census his father ran a 1030 acre farm, employing 20 men and 3 boys.
5 domestics were employed in the house.
From Robert Coulson's biographies
of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"He was at Cambridge University, entering Trinity Hall in 1901. He also
played football as a goalkeeper with Newcastle United in the 1905/6 season
and had spells with Sunderland and the Corinthian Casuals."

football playing career.
2nd Lieutenant Ewart Richardson. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment (Territorial).
Son of T. H. and M. Richardson, of Brynteg, Middlesbrough. Killed on 27 September
1916. Aged 34.
Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
From Robert Coulson's biographies
of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"Born in Middlesbrough in 1882 Ewart Richardson followed a legal career
and was admitted to the bar in 1904. He was a practising solicitor in Middlesbrough
and joined the Yorkshire Regiment in July of 1915.
2nd Lt Richardson joined the 4th Battalion on May 26th 1916 at Locre in Belgium.
The battalion moved down to join the Somme offensive in August where they
went into training at Millencourt.
On September 15th 2nd Lt Richardson and the battalion attacked between High
Wood and Martinpuich. After a brief respite from the front line they went
back into action on September 25th in operations around Eaucourt L'Abbaye
and it was during this action that 2nd Lt Ewart Richardson was killed on September
27th 1916 aged 35."
Private John Dale. 3014. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed on
17 September 1916.
Enlisted Darlington, Resided Barton.

Private George Herbert Gibson. 5376. 4th Battalion
the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George Wetherall Gibson and the late Sarah
Gibson. Killed 26 September 1916. Aged 22.
Born Melsonby (Yorks), Enlisted Northallerton, Resided Barton (Yorks).
Buried ABBEVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
(Shown on the memorial as "B Gibson", where "B" would
have been "Bert".)
Private Robert Baynes. 2807. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of
Robert and Lydia Baynes, of Newton Morrell, Barton, Yorks. Died at home on
7 August 1915. Aged 29.
Buried WARRINGTON CEMETERY.
