The War Memorial for Batley is of a figure of a soldier wearing a greatcoat and cap, standing in a mourning pose, standing on a square base carrying the dedicatory inscription. The memorial is enclosed by a low wall with 12 pillars, - on each of which are bronze plaques commemorating the names of those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and later conflicts. The memorial is located in the Memorial Gardens, off Market Place in Batley.
There are 822 names of those who fell in the First World War commemorated on this memorial, together with 253 names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War.
The names commemorated on this memorial have been transcribed, together with photos of the plaques, on the Kirklees Council website for Batley War Memorial.
18 of the names commemorated are those of men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.

He first served with the 12th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, before transferring
to the 6th and then the 2nd Battalion. ref. Medal
Rolls Index.
The 2nd Battalion were at Valenciennes after the Armistice, where they were
gradually demobilised. Drafts were also used to help provide the Army of Occupation
in Germany.
Willie Hinchliffe died of influenza whilst with the battalion at Valenciennes.
