The Belmont War MemorialThe Belmont War Memorial

The Belmont War Memorial is located on Carrville High Street, almost in line with the pedestrian island crossing from the Blue House Shops, on a site adjoining the churchyard on the North-East side.

59 names are commemorated for men who fell in the First World War, but names of those who fell in subsequent conflicts are inscribed on the four columns at the base of this memorial.

The dedication of the memorial, and a transcript of all the names inscribed on the memorial can be found on the relevant North East War Memorials Project page.

The names of seven soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial. However, at least one of these soldiers (J M Clarkson) served in the WEST Yorkshire Regiment and not the Yorkshire Regiment.

We are extremely grateful to Norman Cummings (<norman_cummings@hotmail.co.uk>) for providing the photographs of this memorial.

Lance Corporal J W Wright. This name is shown as being in the Yorks Regiment on the Memorial. The most likely "fit" to this name was a Corporal John W Wright, 6734, who served with the 6th Battalion at Gallipoli. This soldier enlisted on 4 November 1901, and was discharged from the Army on grounds of sickness on 28 November 1918. (Silver War Badge). A John W Wright, born 1882, died in Q1 1919 in Hartlepool, - very likely the same man.
