The Birtley Parish War Memorial is located on the left hand side of the main road through Birtley going towards Durham on a site called "Constable's Garth.
The memorial is a Cenotaph and two public shelters, set in a garden entered through iron gates.
The Cenotaph is square in plan with rebated panels designed such that a cross is indicated on each face. It is mounted on a circular base
The commemorated names for the First World War are on vertical bronze plates on each face. The names for the Second World War are on horizontal plates on each face below.

197 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 89 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the Second World War

2 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.


Private Thomas Bowman, MM. 23126. 69th Coy. Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 14746 Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 8 October 1916.
Born Birtley (Durham), Enlisted West Hartlepool.
Commemorated Pier and Face 5 C and 12 C, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private Peter Passmoor Grimshaw. 18292. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 17 September 1916.
Born Fencehouses (Durham), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Hetton-le-Hole.
Buried CONTAY BRITISH CEMETERY, CONTAY.
(The 1911 Census shows a Peter P Grimshaw, aged 21, living at 4 Hawkhill Terrace, Birtley. The North East War Memorials Project website transcripton shows Peter Grimshaw as being in the East Yorks Regiment, - an error.)
