The War Memorial, - Blackley (Manchester)

The War Memorial for Blackley, is situated at Boggart Hole Clough, Blackley (Manchester).
Laura Vizard has photographed the memorial and transcribed the names on the memorial. She has generously allowed us to use her photographs of the memorial on this website.
The need to record a memorial is graphically shown by the fact that the Blackley War Memorial was vandalised by scrap metal thieves in July 2010, and two of the commemorative panels were removed. The damage is shown in a photo below, and in a news item on the Manchester Evening News website.
One soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on this memorial.
2nd Lieutenant George Herbert Gorton. 11th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment, attached to 9th Battalion. Son of Thomas and S. A. Gorton,
of 52, Glen Avenue, Blackley, Manchester. Killed 10 July 1916. Aged 19.
(George Herbert Gorton was initially a Private (2952) in the Royal Scots Regiment
before being commissioned into the Yorkshire Regiment).
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
