During the First World War, Brandhoek was within the area comparatively safe from shell fire which extended beyond Vlamertinghe Church. Field ambulances were posted there continuously and the Military Cemetery was opened early in May 1915 in a field adjoining the dressing station. It closed in July 1917 when the New Military Cemetery was opened nearby, to be followed by the New Military Cemetery No 3 in August 1917.

Brandhoek Military Cemetery now contains 669 First World War burials.

Amongst the graves are those for 12 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.

We are extremely grateful to Chris Weekes (<weebex12@hotmail.com>) who has generously provided the photographs on this page.

Elaine Miller (<emiller@sky.com>) of the Murton Heritage Group has forwarded the following information on Serjeant John Brown;-
"This soldier is a man of two names. He was born under the name John Henry Gray in 1879. At the age of 1 in 1881 his name was marked down as Grey (different spelling but that is probably down to the enumerator). 1891 and 1901 his name was Brown. The 1911 census he goes back to Gray but by the time he enlisted once again his name was Brown. These name changes applied to all of his family."
