The War Memorial for Brandon, Co. Durham

The War Memorial for Brandon is located at the top (Northern) end of Sawmills Lane in Brandon, shortly before the road turns sharp left towards New Brancepeth. The memorial used to be in front of a public house, the Prince Bishop, but this has now been converted into a private house. Another private house has been built on what was once the adjacent car park.
The memorial is a simple shaft, mounted on a square base. One face of the base carries the dedication for the memorial. Two of the other faces commemorate 14 men who lost their lives in the First World War, and the remaining face commemorates 4 men who lost their lives in the Second World War.
One slight curiosity of the memorial is that the dedication for the First World War puts the dates at 1914 - 1918, and yet the commemorations are for 1914 - 1919.
The names of those commemorated are shown below.
1914-1918 George Brown Thomas Chilton Samuel Cully MM Arthur Guyll Edward Kelly Henry Robson William Robson |
1914-1918 Albert Rodgers Horace Schofield Raymond Scott John Sherrington Frankland Smith John Smith Robert Warkman |
1939-1945 N Tunney P Guyll W Bramley C Colwell |
