The Brighton War Memorial commemorating the fallen of The First World War is situated in The Old Steine Gardens. The names of those who died are included on two four sided pillars. There are 2,390 names including 33 who have been added to the top and bottom margins of the pillars. The Memorial simply records the surname and initial(s).

In the photo above, one of the two bronze pillars on which the names are commemorated can be seen to the left of the colonnade. Three soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.


2nd Lieutenant Ernest Frederick Beal, VC. 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John J. W. and Jane Stillman Beal, of 55, East St., Brighton. Killed 22 March 1918. Aged 35.
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.

Private Peter Riley. 13340. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr & Mrs Riley of Oldham. Husband of Mrs P Riley of Brighton. Killed 10 July 1916.
Born Royton (Oldham, Lancs), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Oldham.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private George Puttock. 79003. 1st/7th Battalion Durham Light Infantry, formerly 6802 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Frank William and Lucy Puttock, of 141, Loder Rd., Brighton. Killed 13 April 1918. Aged 24.
Born Southborough (Kent), Enlisted Hove, Resided Brighton.
Commemorated on Panel 8 and 9, PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL.
