The War Memorial in Brotton The War Memorial in Brotton

The War Memorial for Brotton is at the top of the hill on the main street, almost opposite the Parish church. The Memorial is in the form of a cross, on the base of which is inscribed;-
"NOT AS A LADDER TO HEAVEN, NOT AS A WITNESS OF ANY CREED BUT SIMPLE SERVICE GIVEN TO HIS OWN KIND IN THEIR COMMON NEED".

Private Arthur Cooke. 4093. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Alfred and Sarah Cooke, of Skelton-in-Cleveland, Yorks. Killed 11 November 1916. Aged 32.

Private James Clarke. 19645. 10th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Thomas and Mary Clarke, of Middlesbrough; husband of Nellie Clarke, of 14, Broadbent St., Brotton, Yorks. Killed 12 July 1916. Aged 39.
