The War Memorial for Burnhope (1)
Photo : Norman Cummings (<norman_cummings@hotmail.co.uk>)
The Burnhope War Memorial is part of a Garden of Remembrance,
and is situated at the top end of Holmside Lane in the village. The Garden
of Remembrance is a paved area, with a bird bath in its centre. The memorial
commemorations are mounted in stone panels on a brick building with a pitched
tile roof with oak beams. There are alcoves for seats on each side.
There is a granite cross on the roof over the central archway inscribed “1919.
To the glorious dead”.
77 names of men who fell in the First World War are commemorated on the memorial, and a further 19 for those who died in the Second World War. A transcription of all the names can be found on the website for the North East War Memorials Project.
Three men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.
We are very grateful for Norman Cummings (<norman_cummings@hotmail.co.uk>) for providing the photographs of this memorial.
