David Sloan (<david.sloan@btinternet.com>) has kindly provided the photo of the memorial plaque in St. Barnabas' Church, Burnmoor (Co. Durham). One of the names on this plaque is that of "J E Mote". However, J E Mote served in the Yorkshire Regiment as J E Cowlishaw, and David Sloan's explanation for the change in name is as follows;-

"John Edward's mother, Maria Cowleshaw, remarried in 1914 when John was 20. She became Maria Mote and as he is her son hence he is marked as J E Mote."

"Cowleshaw" and "Cowlishaw" are the same name, - "Cowlishaw" is the spelling used in the Yorkshire Regiment records. To add to naming confusions, the village of Burnmoor is known locally as such, but is shown on the Ordnance Survey maps as "Bournmoor".
