The War Memorial for Bury St. Edmunds (Suffolk)

The Bury St. Edmunds War Memorial is located on Angel Hill, almost due North of the cathedral church of St. Edmundsbury.
No names are recorded on the memorial, but instead the south
tier bears the inscription: "The roll of honour which rests on a lectern
in the Cathedral Church of St James (*) contains the names of 427 men of this
town who made the supreme sacrifice."
(* now known as St. Edmundsbury).
Inside the cathedral a leather bound Book of Remembrance volume
is contained under glass within a decorative lectern.The names of 434 (**)
men who lost their lives in the First World War are commemoratedin this book.

Amongst those commemorated are four soldiers who served with the Yorkshire
Regiment.
Private George Thomas Brabrook. 266232. 4th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment, transferred to (610832) Labour Corps. Son of John and
Margaret Brabrook, of Bury St. Edmund's. Killed 24 October 1918. Aged 20.
Born Walthamstow (Essex), Enlisted Bury St. Edmund's (Suffolk).
Buried BELLICOURT BRITISH CEMETERY.
(SDGW gives Yorkshire Regt No as 21270.)
Private Herbert Garwood Ford, 33186. 10th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 3219 Suffolk Regt. Killed 4 October 1917.
Born Bury St. Edmunds (Suffolk), Enlisted Bury St. Edmunds.
Buried BELLICOURT NEW BRITISH CEMETERY.

1918.
Born Bury St. Edmunds (Suffolk), Enlisted Bury St. Edmunds.
Buried VAILLY BRITISH CEMETERY.
Private Victor Southgate. 33196. 5th Battalion the
Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 2710 Suffolk Regt. Son of Harry and Josephine
Southgate, of 7, St. Edmund's Place, Bury St. Edmund'S. Killed 27 March 1918.
Aged 20.
Born Norton (Suffolk), Enlisted Bury St. Edmunds.
Buried NAMPS-AU-VAL BRITISH CEMETERY.
