The War Memorial for Buxton (Derbyshire)

The Buxton War Memorial commemorates the residents of Buxton who died in both the First and Second World Wars. The memorial is prominently sited on The Slopes, a steep landscaped hill in the town centre, with extensive views over the town to the North.
The website MIlitary Images provides a transcription of all the names on this memorial, together with photos of the memorial and some details on the names. There are 314 names for those who lost their lives in the First World War, and 70 names for those who died in the Second World War.
Amongst the names listed are those of 3 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment,
2nd Lieutenant Gerald Wallace ADAM.
13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, formerly Leicestershire Regiment. Son of
Mr. and Mrs. John Wallace Adam, of Heaton Moor, Stockport. Died on 10 August
1919. Aged 20.
Commemorated on the ARCHANGEL MEMORIAL.

10th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 243823 the Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 28 June 1918.
Born Buxton (Derbyshire), Enlisted Buxton.
Commemorated on Panel 4, PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL.
(From Military Images, - Son of James and Susan Holmes. Commemorated on a
family memorial at Buxton Cemetery, and also on the Ploegsteert Memorial,
Belgium. Aged 27.)
Private Matthew Sweetmore. 243481. 4th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Husband of Jessie Sellers (formerly Sweetmore), of 40, Kiln Cottages,
Harper Hill, Buxton, Derbyshire. Killed 22 March 1918. Aged 36.
Born Burbage (Derby), Enlisted Buxton, Resided Flash.
Commemorated on Panel 31 and 32, POZIERES MEMORIAL.
(Note from Richard Roberts, <richard.nsw@googlemail.com>, "Matthew
Sweetmore is recorded on the Buxton WM as Sweatmore but then on some Census
records, he is named as Treetmore! He was the son of Thomas and Priscilla
Sweetmore.)
