The First World War Memorial for Peterhouse College, Cambridge University, is situated in the Peterhouse College Chapel. The memorial consists of two brass plaques, commemorating the names of 51 men (past students) who fell in the First World War.

Two Officers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.

Dr. Elizabeth Leedham-Green, of Peterhouse College, has kindly provided additional biographical details on the two Yorkshire Regiment Officers.


2nd Lieutenant Arthur Hammond Butler Shipley. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the Rev. Arthur Granville Shipley, M.A., and Caroline Mary Ellen Shipley, of All Saints' Vicarage, Pontefract, Yorks. Also served at Gallipoli. Killed 27 September 1916. Aged 21.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
(Notes from Dr. Leedham-Green;-
"Arthur Hammond Butler Shipley. Born 26 Aug. 1895, at Ledbury, Herefordshire. Son of Rev.Arthur Granville Shipley, All Saints’ Vicarage, Pontefract, Yorks.
Educated at Haileybury College.
Admitted to Peterhouse, 12 Jan. 1914 on an Entrance Scholarship of £40. Did not matriculate.")

Captain Charles Sproxton (Adjutant), MC. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Arthur and Alice Sproxton, of 114, Lee St., Holderness Rd., Hull. B.A. (Hons. Cambridge). Killed 19 June 1917. Aged 26.
Buried ST. MARTIN CALVAIRE BRITISH CEMETERY, ST. MARTIN-SUR-COJEUL.

B.A. (1st class in the part I of the History Tripos, 1911, and in part II, 1912) 1912.
History Exhibitioner 1909, and Scholar 4 Nov. 1911. Gladstone Memorial Prize, 1911. Hugo de Balsham Student, 1912.
Elected Fellow, 29 Oct. 1914.
Capt. Yorkshire Regiment (T.F.). Wounded twice. Military Cross. Mentioned in dispatches.
Killed in action, 19 July 1917.
