The War Memorial, Carlin How
Photo : Edward Nicholl
Carlin How War Memorial is to the right hand side above the A174 Brotton to Loftus Road just before it dips down to the Skinningrove valley. Access is via Front Street, although out of sight as you enter the street, and hidden by the row of houses/shops to right. (Note: the parents of one of the dead, - Pte W Kemp, lived in Front Street.)
43 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War,
together with 16 names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War,
are commemorated on the memorial.
21 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this
memorial.
Photos of the Commemorations and the Dedication are shown below the details of the Yorkshire Regiment soldiers found on the memorial.
Private Charles Edgar Bounes. 14819. 9th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Ellen Welham, of 4, Wheatlands Terrace, Loftus,
Yorks. Killed 7 June 1917. Aged 26.
Born Liverton Mines (Lofthouse), Enlisted Redcar, Resided Carlin How.
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.
Richard Roberts <richard.nsw@googlemail.com> has researched the family
istory of the above soldier and states;-
"Charles Edgar Bounes was born in 1891 to Ellen Bounes (age 18) and Thomas
Welham (age 25). His parents subsequently married in 1893 and a year later
his brother John William Welham was born. John was killed in WW1 whilst serving
with the Yorks Regt., and is commemorated on the Carlin How Memorial. I believe
the E Welham commemorated on the same memorial is actually Charles
Edgar Bounes.
His registered birth name appears in his military records. However, when his
father completed the 1911 Census return he recorded his son as Charles Edgar
Welham see:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageviewer/collections/2352/images/rg14_29159_0101_03?pId=32750051
I think it is reasonable to assume that as far as friends and family were
concerned Charles Edgar Bounes was a Welham and most likely known by his middle
name hence E Welham on the Carlin How memorial. There is no record
of an E Welham as such with any association with Carlin How in either the
SDGW or CWGC records."
