The First World War Memorial for Chester-le-Street in the Church of St. Mary and St. Cuthbert's Church is located at the eastern end of the Nave, attached to the South wall.

2 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment, and one former Yorkshire Regiment soldier, are commemorated on this memorial. Additionally, an Officer from the Northumberland Fusiliers who was serving attached to the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated.


Major Lindsay Alfred Barrett, MC. 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, attached to 1st/4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Charles Rollo Barrett and Mary Delmar Barrett, of Pelaw House, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Killed 17 March 1916. Aged 23.
Buried POPERINGHE NEW MILITARY CEMETERY.

Private Robert Taylor. 39240. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John and Minnie Taylor, of 15, Co-operative St., Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Killed 16 May 1917. Aged 20.
Born Chester-le-Street (Co. Durham), Enlisted Chester-le-Street (Co. Durham).
Buried AUBIGNY COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.

Private John Warnes, 23380. 15th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George and Elizabeth Jane Warnes. Died at home 23 May 1916. Aged 24.
Born Pelton (Durham), Enlisted Jarrow, Resided Chester-le-Street (Durham)
Buried RUGELEY CEMETERY.
(SDGW incorrectly states the battalion as being the 13th Battalion. The 15th Battalion was based in Rugely, Staffs.)

Private Richard Waugh. 34610. 2nd/5th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, formerly 15632 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 28 November 1917.
Born Chester-le-Street (Durham), Enlisted Durham.
