The Ccenotaph in Cleckheaton is located in The Memorial Park in the centre of the town and is referred to in several sources as the Cleckheaton War Memorial. Correctly, however, it should be the Spenborough War Memorial, for at the time of the First World War Spenborough District consisted of the towns and villages of Cleckheaton, Liversedge, Gomersal, Scholes, Flush, Millbridge, Hightown, Roberttown, Norristhorpe, part of Oakenthorpe and other smaller communities.
The Cenotaph commemorates casualties from the whole Spenborough district including one woman and 508 men who died in the First World War, and 218 from the Second World War together with 7 from conflicts following the end of the Second World War.
The names of those commemorated, with their regiments, have
been transcribed on the Yorkshire
Indexers website.
Photos of the commemorative panels, with a transcription of names, can be
found on the Kirklees
Council website for the memorial.
Charlie Turpin, military historian for the Spenborough Branch of the British
Legion, has produced a Roll of Honour for the Cenotaph called "Cleckheaton's
Finest".
