The War Memorial for Clitheroe (Lancs) in the Castle Gardens (1)

The War Memorial for Clitheroe (Lancashire), is situated inside the Castle Gardens and overlooks the town and distant Pendle Hill.

The memorial is a sculpture of a soldier in mourning pose, with head bowed and rifle reversed. The sculpture stands on a pedestal on the face of which is the dedication to those who lost their lives in the First World War. The commemorations of those who lost their lives in the First World War, 324 names, are on metal plates fixed to the other three sides of the pedestal.

The Second World War commemorations (72 names) are on a metal plate fixed to the base of the memorial, at the front.

3 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.

Private Walter Robert Catlow. 41805. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 160051 R F A. Son of Robert and Mary Ann Catlow, of Lincoln St., Blackburn; husband of Isabella Catlow, of 31, Bawdlands, Clitheroe, Lancs. Killed 4 October 1917. Aged 34.
Born Blackburn, Enlisted Clitheroe.
Buried HOOGE CRATER CEMETERY.

Private Robert Clarkson. 24194.
7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Richard and Jane Clarkson, of 28, Littlemoor Rd., Clitheroe, Lancs. Killed 17 April 1916. Aged 20.
Born Lancaster, Enlisted Clitheroe.
Buried CITE BONJEAN MILITARY CEMETERY,

Private Robert Savage. 203674. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Isabella Savage; husband of Annie Savage, of 23, Church St., Aberdovey, Merioneth. Born at Clitheroe, Lancs. Killed 8 July 1918. Aged 32.

Buried SISSONNE BRITISH CEMETERY.
