The Commondale War Memorial The Commondale War Memorial

The Commondale War Memorial is located at the road junction by the Cleveland Inn, and is set on a small Green.

The Memorial is a simple cross, with the dedication and commemorations inscribed on glazed stomeware plaques on the four sides of the base of the cross. The dedication on the memorial reads;-
"In Honoured Memory of the Men of Commondale, who Gave Their Lives for God, King, and Country, in the Great War. 1914 - 1918. Their Name Shall Live For Ever; and Their Glory Shall Not be Blotted Out. Lest We Forget."

Nine men who lost their lives in the First World War are commemorated on this memorial, including four who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.

Private Samuel Lawson, 317714. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John G. and Laura L. Lawson, of I, White Horse Yard, Church St., Whitby, Yorks. Killed 15 June 1915. Aged 20.

Private John Thomas Monck. 3/9331. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Mary Jane Monck, of Marske-by-Sea. Killed 10 October 1916. Aged 35.
Born Marske-by-Sea (Yorks), Enlisted Middlesbrough, Resided Commondale (Grosmont).
Buried LE TREPORT MILITARY CEMETERY.

Private Frederick William Robinson, 28155. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 20 May 1917.
Buried RAILWAY DUGOUTS BURIAL GROUND
Born Skelton-in-Cleveland, Enlisted Stokesley, Resided Hylton (Yarm).
