The Memorial Tablet inside the Parish Church of Danby Wiske is inscribed as follows;-
"IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THIS COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-1918, AND ESPECIALLY THOSE FROM THIS PARISH. VIZ"

2nd Lieutenant Bertram Mitford Cust. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Mrs. W. M. G. Cust, of 2, Devonshire Place, London. Killed 9 November 1915. Aged 24.
Buried HOUPLINES COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
The following biographical information is taken from Roberts Coulson's Biographies of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"Bertram Cust was born in Kensington in London in 1891.
He was with the 10th Battalion on its formation on 3 September 1914 but didn’t sail with the battalion in September of 1915 He joined the battalion after the Battle of Loos on 10 October 1915 while they were in Strazeele.
On 15 October the battalion moved to the Armentieres sector where 2nd Lt Bertram Cust was killed in action on 9 November 1915 at the age of 24.
It was his first taste of the trenches and he died “while out in front.”"

Private James Catterick, 2397. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Benjamin and Jane Ann Catterick, of Danby Wiske, Northallerton, Yorks. Killed 29 October 1915. Aged 22.
Buried CHAPELLE-D'ARMENTIERES NEW MILITARY CEMETERY.
Enlisted Northallerton, Resided Danby Wiske.

Private Fred Nicholson, 34649. 10th Battalion King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry), formerly 5381 Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John and Mary Ann Nicholson, of 22, Westgate, Pickering, Yorks. Killed 25 September 1916.
Commemorated Pier and Face 11 C and 12 A, Thiepval Memorial.
Born Pickering (Yorks), Enlisted Northallerton.

Private John Taylor, 241817. 5th Battalion Border Regiment, formerly 3511 Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Taylor, of Streetlam, Danby Wiske, Northallerton. Yorks. Killed 23 March 1918. Aged 21.
Commemorated Panel 46, Pozieres Memorial.
Enlisted Northallerton (Yorks).
(SDGW has date of death as 27 March 1918)
