The Delhii Memorial (India Gate)
The Delhii Memorial (India Gate)
Photo : Julian Panton (<pantonjf@gmail.com>)

Of the 13,300 Commonwealth servicemen commemorated by name on the memorial, just over 1,000 lie in cemeteries to the west of the River Indus, where maintenance was not possible. The remainder died in fighting on or beyond the North West Frontier and during the Third Afghan War, and have no known grave.

The Delhi Memorial also acts as a national memorial to all the 70,000 soldiers of undivided India who died during the years 1914-1921, the majority of whom are commemorated by name outside the confines of India.
The dedication of this memorial is shown in the photograph below.

The memorial was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It was unveiled by Lord Irwin on 12 February 1931.

There are over 13,000 names on the memorial. 62 soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment are named on the memorial, of whom 18 are buried in the Rawalpindi War Cemetery (the remaining 44 soldiers are buried elsewhere and/or have no known, or maintained, graves).

We are very grateful to Julian Panton (<pantonjf@gmail.com>) for the photos of the Delhi Memorial (India Gate).

Further comments on Lieutenant Hare by Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>);-

I have had a good look into this officer’s background. He was born in 1898 in Dublin City. The 1911 Ireland Census shows him aged 13, a scholar living with his widowed mother Helen Hare, a boarding house keeper, at Frederick Street North, Rotunda, Dublin. He had an older brother George, aged 25 and a younger one, Archibald John James aged 11. His father shows up on the 1901 Ireland Census, aged 64, a Clerk in Holy Orders, Rector of the Church of Ireland living apart from the family at Killywilliam, Laragh, Fermanagh whilst his family are at the same Frederick Street address in Dublin as in 1911.

I have done a diligent search of the various websites which cover war memorials in Ireland and Henry hasn’t turned up on any of them and there is no indication that he ever lived this side of the Irish Sea.
