The Derby (Nottingham Road) War Memorial
Photo : Richard Clarke
This War Memorial is now located in the grounds of the Nottingham Road Cemetery.
The memorial originally stood on Nottingham Road, Derby, nearly opposite
the end of St. Mark’s Road. However, after at least two moves from its
original location, it now stands within the cemetery.
The history of this memorial with a transcription of the names on it is presented
on a website by the Chaddesden
Historical Group.
One soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on this memorial.
Private Joseph William Payne. 80588. 15th Battalion Durham Light
Infantry, formerly 243820 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 8 November 1918.
Born Littleover, Enlisted Derby.
Buried AULNOYE COMMUNAL CEMETERY.
(Shown in both the CWGC register and SDGW as "W Payne / "William
Payne". However, as researched by Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>)
from census information;-
The 1911 Census has Joseph William Payne age 25 born Littleover living at
5 Pittar Street, Derby. William Payne on SDGW is described as having been
born in Littleover and he is the only Payne with any forename born there.)
