The original St Alkmund's church was a Victorian building which stood in an historic Georgian Square near the city centre. The area was cleared in 1968 and the Church demolished to enable the construction of Derby's inner ring road. St. Alkmund's church was replaced in the early 1970's with a modernistic church on Kedleston Road, Derby, and is located about 200 yards from the site where another church, St. Aidan's Church, stood.
St. Aidan's Church, Derby, was demolished soon after 1972. St Aidan's was known as the "iron church" due to its corrugated iron fabric and was classed as a mission hall.
Both churches contained a memorial plaque commemorating those who fell in the First World War, and in each church one soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is remembered on the commemorative plaque.
The photos of the memorial plaque in St. Alkmund's Church were taken by Chris Preston.
The memorial plaque from St. Aidan's Church was spotted by Geoff Tann in an antiques fair where it was being sold on a private basis, and he kindly forwarded it to this website.
