Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) has forwarded photos of the War Memorial outside St. Giles's Church in Village Street, Derby.

78 names commemorated are on the memorial. The names have been transcribed on the Derby and Derbyshire War Memorials Project website.
Amongst the names is that of one man from the Yorkshire Regiment, Pte. Arthur Knapman, who died at home on 22 February 1920 after being discharged from the Army.

There is no record of Private Knapman in either the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, nor in Soldiers Died in the Great War. However, his Medal Record Index card and his Service Record can be found on Ancestry.co.uk.

Private Arthur Knapman. 1780. The Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 40179 3rd/7th Battalion West Riding Regiment and Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry.
Enlisted at Derby 18th September 1915 aged 37. Stated his place of residence as 43, Clarence Road, Derby. Employed as a clothier’s assistant.

He married a Nora Burrows in the winter of 1916 who, after his death, was found to be eligible for a War Widows Pension. He was discharged from the Army in 1919 and died at home on 22 February 1920 of Chronic Interstitial Nephritis and Ureamia (kidney failure). He spent much of his army career in Depot duties which often indicates a man of poor general health. He is buried at Nottingham Road Cemetery, Derby (Section B7 Grave 23097) but his grave is not marked with a headstone. This section is a wooded area in which individual grave locations are not recorded so it is impossible to say with any accuracy where he lies. Whilst he was entitled to both the Victory and British War Medals neither was ever claimed.
(Additional information about the life of Arthur Knapman has been kindly contributed by Richard Roberts)
