Richard Roberts (<richard@nosnailshere.co.uk>) has forwarded photos of the War Memorial outside St. James's Church in Malcolm Street, Derby. Richard provides the following information on this memorial;-
"The Church hasn't been used for years as a place of worship and currently
is being used by "Alter Rock" as a
training venue for artificial rock climbing.
The stonework of the building is, as you can see, very dirty as is the Memorial itself which, frankly, is very neglected and a disgrace to the memory of the men commemorated on it; ironically so when you read the main inscription which is:
IN PROUD AND THANKFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM THE CHURCH AND PARISH OF ST JAMES DERBY WHO FELL IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR 1914-1918.
Their names are recorded in applied lead lettering which has in some instances completely disappeared or partially so. However, the names of two Yorkshire Regiment casualties can be identified. Pte Robert Burgess 41726 and Pte Alfred Dredge 29483."
Private Robert Reece Burgess. 41726. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment, formerly 62787 R F A. Killed 6 May 1917
Born Derby, Enlisted Derby.
Buried GREVILLERS BRITISH CEMETERY.
(Note from Richard Roberts; "His birth was registered in the Dec Qtr.
of 1896 (Derby). I have looked at the 1901 Census records and there is a Robert
Burgess, age 4, son of George & Mary Burgess living at 40 Graham St.,
in the Parish of St James the Greater.")
Private Alfred Dredge. 29483. 13th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment,
formerly 28341 Notts & Derby Regt. Killed 25 August 1916. Aged 19.
Born Litchurch (Derby), Enlisted Derby.
Buried MAROC BRITISH CEMETERY, GRENAY.
(Note from Richard Roberts; "He was born in Derby in 1897 and in 1901
his family was living at 21 Russell Street which is about half a mile from
the Church").
