Westvleteren was outside the front held by Commonwealth forces in Belgium during the First World War, but in July 1917, in readiness for the forthcoming offensive, groups of casualty clearing stations were placed at three positions called by the troops Mendinghem, Dozinghem and Bandaghem.

The 4th, 47th and 61st Casualty Clearing Stations were posted at Dozinghem and the military cemetery was used by them until early in 1918.

There are now 3,174 Commonwealth burials of the First World War in the cemetery and 65 German war graves from this period. The cemetery also contains 73 Second World War burials dating from the Allied withdrawal to Dunkirk in May 1940.

The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. The wrought iron gates were presented by the family of the late Lord Redesdale, whose son, Major Mitford, is buried in the Cemetery.

Amongst the graves are 41 of soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.
Of the 73 burials from the Second World War, 3 were soldiers of the Green Howards. Photos of their headstones have been taken by Christopher Weekes, <weebex12@hotmail.com>. If you would like a copy of one of these photos, not shown below, please contact Edward Nicholl (<emn@enicholl.com>).
An unusual burial is that of an "American Tommy", - an American who served with a Canadian Machine Gun crew. A photo of his headstone, together with a biographical sheet placed beside it, is shown below.

Photos of the cemetery and the gravestones are by Christopher Weekes, <weebex12@hotmail.com> and Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>). A photo of Private Robert Thompson's headstone is by by Karen Ette (<karen_ette@yahoo.co.uk>).

Photo : Richard Roberts (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>)

(*) Richard Roberts comments;-
I believe the Army records perpetuate two errors in respect of this man. Firstly he was registered at birth as Frederick ELI (more plausible a name than Eilly) and he was born in 1898 in Breaston not Beeston which, as they are only five miles apart, often leads to some confusion! The 1911 Census record shows him living at Draycott Road, Breaston with parents Arthur & Sarah Ann Hallam.
