The Dulwich College War Memorial is a Listed Building in its own right, and is described on the website for Listed Buildings.

485 names of past members of the College who lost their lives in the First World War are commemorated on the Dulwich College War Memorial.

Amongst the above names on this memorial are those of three Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment, one of whom was one of the Victoria Cross holders in the regiment.


Captain Robert Alister Field, MC. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Joseph Louis and Frances Margaret Field, of 18, Lansdowne Rd., Wimbledon, London. Killed 2 April 1917. Aged 22.
Buried HENIN COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
Robert Coulson has provided considerable biographical information on Captain Field in his "Biographies of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment".

Major Stewart Walter Loudon-Shand, VC. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. J. L. Loudoun-Shand, of 27, Alleyn Park, Dulwich, London. Killed 1 July 1916. Aged 36.
Buried NORFOLK CEMETERY, BECORDEL-BECOURT.
An extract from "The London Gazette," No. 29740, dated 8th Sept., 1916, records the following:-"For most conspicuous bravery. When his company attempted to climb over the parapet to attack the enemy's trenches, they were met by very fierce machine gun fire, which temporarily stopped their progress. Maj. Loudoun-Shand immediately leapt on the parapet, helped the men over it, and encouraged them in every way until he fell mortally wounded. Even then he insisted on being propped up in the trench, and went on encouraging the non-commissioned officers and men until he died."

2nd Lieutenant Thomas Wood Rutherford. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Sir Robert Rutherford and Lady Rutherford, of "Fairholme," The Millway, Reigate, Surrey. KIlled 22 August 1915. Aged 31.
