The War Memorial for Ely (Cambs) is set into the wall that surrounds Ely Cathedral. The memorial is by the High Street, directly across from the market square.

The names of 224 men who lost their lives in the First World War, and 94 men who died during the Second World War, are commemorated on the memorial. The commemorative panels are shown on Gordon Craig's War Memorials website, and are reproduced below with his permission.

Four men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are shown on this memorial.

Major Victor Louis Louis Sydney Beckett, Private Edward William Everitt, Private Reuben Jonathan James Lemon, and Private Reginald Seekings who also appear on the War Memorial inside Ely Cathedral.


Major Victor Louis Sydney Beckett. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Dr. Francis Mears Beckett and Harriet Elizabeth Beckett, of St. Audrey's, Ely, Cambs. Killed 14 July 1916. Aged 34.
Buried HEILLY STATION CEMETERY.

The following biographical information is taken from Roberts Coulson's Biographies of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"Victor Beckett entered Christ's College at Cambridge in 1901.
He was one of the original officers of the 9th Battalion who landed at Boulogne on August 27th 1915. The battalion spent the winter of 1915 in the Armentieres sector and the spring of 1916 in and out of the line around Angres and the Souchez river.
Major Beckett and the battalion arrived on the Somme on June 24th 1916. Their first taste of the front line came on July 3rd in the La Boiselle area.
One week later the battalion took part in the attack on Contalmaison during which Victor Beckett was wounded.
Major Victor Louis Sydney Beckett was taken from the line for treatment at the casualty centre at Heilly Station where he died of his wounds on July 14th 1916 at the age of 34."

Private Edward William Everett. 7605. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 3883 Cambs Regt. Son of Arthur William and Rose Everett, of 54, Barton Rd., Ely. Killed 19 January 1917. Aged 22.
Born Ely (Cambs), Enlisted Cambridge, Resided Ely.
Buried ELY CEMETERY.

Private Reuben Jonathan James Lemon. 235208. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 19 July 1917.
Enlisted Cambridge, Resided Ely.
Buried ROOKERY BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Reginald Seekings, 5248. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 1031 Cambridgeshire Regiment. Died of wounds 20 November 1916.
Born Burntfen (Ely), Enlisted Ely, Resided Middle Fen.
Buried DERNANCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
