The War Memorial in the RC Church, Newhouse, Esh Winning is a marble plaque set beneath a stained glass window.
The lettering is in Roman capitals.

Private Michael McElwee. 18114. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Michael and J. McElwee, of Waterhouses, Co. Durham. Killed 2 September 1916. Aged 22.
Born Gateshead, Enlisted Durham, Resided Waterhouses (Durham).
Buried in RIFLE HOUSE CEMETERY
