Etaples Cemetery (1)
Photo : Christopher Weekes (<weebex12@hotmail.com>)
The following information is taken from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.
Etaples Military Cemetery contains 10,773 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, the earliest dating from May 1915. 35 of these burials are unidentified. During the First World War, the area around Etaples contained 100,000 troops who were camped among the sand dunes. The hospitals included eleven general, one stationary, four Red Cross hospitals and a convalescent depot that between them could deal with 22,000 wounded or sick.
104 of the First World War burials are of men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.
One of the burials is that of the oldest known British serving soldier to have died in the First World War, - Lieutenant Colonel Jasper Myers Richardson, aged 68.
