The War Memorial for Eye (Suffolk) stands outside the Town Hall,
at the junction of Boad Street and Cross Street.
48 names are commemorated on the memorial as having lost their lives in the
First World War, and 14 names are commemorated for the Second World War.
We are very grateful to Peter
Clarke who has provided the photos of the memorial. Peter Clarke has also
provided extensive
biographical information on the names that are commemorated.
One soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on this memorial.
Private Robert Major Murton. 21094. 7th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Formerly 18762 Durham L I. Killed 1 July 1916.
Born Eye (Suffolk), Enlisted Durham, Resided New Shildon (Durham).
Buried FRICOURT BRITISH CEMETERY.
(It appears that the full name of Private Murton is "Robert Major Murton" as shown on the War Memorial, although as "Robert Murton" in the CWGC and SDGW data. See Peter Clarke's notes.)
