The Filey War Memorial is in the form of a Memorial Arch at the entrance to the Memorial Garden, Murray Street, Filey. Attached on either side of this arch are bronze plaques on which the names of 72 men who died in the First World War and 53 men who died in the Second World War are commemorated.

Ten men from the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.


Major Harold Brown. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. DSO, M.C. &Croix de Guerre with Palm (France). Son of G. W. Brown, of Lindsay Grange, Branksome Park, Bournemouth; husband of Dorothy J. E. Brown, of Kingston Lodge, Leigh Woods, Bristol. Killed on 23 March 1918. Aged 39.
Commemorated on Panel 31 and 32, POZIERES MEMORIAL.

Private Harold Crimlisk. 41738. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment,formerly 174516 R F A. Son of Thomas and Margaret Crimlisk, of 21, Victoria Avenue, Filey, Yorks. Killed 27 September 1917. Aged 20.
Born Filey, Enlisted Beverley (Yorks), Resided Filey.
Buried CEMENT HOUSE CEMETERY.

Lance Corporal John William Glenton, MM, 240346. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John William and Hannah Margaret Glenton, of Mount Pleasant, Muston, Filey; husband of Margaret Ellen Glenton, of Mount Pleasant, Muston, Filey, Yorks. KIlled 26 March 1918. Aged 34.

Lance Corporal Jenkinson Haxby. 19795. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Matthew C. and Elizabeth Ann Haxby of 16 Mitford St., Filey, Yorks. Killed 7 July 1916. Aged 23.

Private Thomas Jenkinson, 2248. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Thomas Robert and Elizabeth Towse Jenkinson, of "Fortuyn," 57, Mitford St., Filey, Yorks. Killed 25 April 1915. Aged 19.

Lance Corporal Thomas Cammish Major. 241236. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mary A. G. Major, of Mount Pleasant Cottage, Filey, Yorks, and the late Richard Major. Killed 8 October 1918. Aged 21.

Buried DANTZIG ALLEY BRITISH CEMETERY, MAMETZ.
(On the Filey War memorial there is an "E Warde", and in St. Oswald's Church, Filey, an "Edward Ward of the 5th Battalion, killed 1916" is commemorated. It is assumed that the above Private Edward Sydney Ward is the relevant person.)
