The First World War Memorial for Flaxton is the Lych Gate at the entrance to St. Lawrence's Church. A brass plaque commemorating 11 men who lost their lives in the First World War is attached to the inside of the gate, on the left.

We are extremely grateful to the Revd Chris Winfield of the Harton Benefice for photographing the memorial plaque for this website.

Two men who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.


Private Frank Poulter. 24401. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 10 July 1916.
Born Hessle (Yorks), Enlisted Flaxton (Yorks).
Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private Mark Nowlson Raper. 27239. 10th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mark Nowlson Raper and Fanny Raper, of Flaxton, York. Killed 15 October 1918. Aged 38.
Born Flaxton (Yorks), Enlisted Flaxton.
Buried NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY.
