The First World War Memorial in St. Michael's Church, Garston commemorates 227 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War. A transcription of these names, with their regiments, is given on the Garston and District Historical Society's website.

We are very grateful to Richard Humphreys, of the above Society, for forwarding information on this memorial to the Yorkshire Regiment Remembrance website.

One soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on the Garston St. Michael's Church War Memorial.

Private Oswald Norman Andrews. 30621. 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 41618 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Hamblet and Harriet Ellen Andrews, of 24, Hartington Rd., Garston, Liverpool. Killed 25 April 1918. Aged 21.
Born Liverpool, Enlisted Liverpool.
Commemorated Panel 47 to 48 and 163A, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
(SDGW has former regiment as 160609 RFA)
(Private Andrews' Service Record exists. From this it can be seen that he was initially in the RFA in a Reserve Battery, before being transferred to the Yorkshire Regiment, and sent to France, on 28 December 1916. He was wounded (GSW to chest) on 21 October 1917, and spent the next two months in hospital in Chichester. On returning to active service he was posted to France on 3 April 1918 and was transferred from the Yorkshire Regiment to the East Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in action 3 weeks later).
(The 1911 Census gives Private Andrews' place of birth as being Northwich, Cheshire. Confirmed by Cheshire BMD records.)
