The War memorial at Gilling East forms the entrance archway to the Parish Church
of the Holy Cross. The names of 13 men from Gilling East, Grimstone, and Cawton
are shown on 2 plaques on either side of the archway. Of these 13 names, 7 were
from the Yorkshire Regiment. The names of the men who gave their lives in the
First World War, on the Gilling East War Memorial, are;-

Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mary E. Charter, of West End, Kirkby Moorside,
Yorks, and the late John Charter. Killed 29 April 1918. Aged 27.
Born Stockton-on-Tees, Enlisted Malton, Resided Gilling East.
Buried RUMAUCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY.
