The Grangetown (Middlesbrough) War Memorial

The Grangetown (Langbaurgh, Cleveland) War Memorial is a Celtic cross on a rectangular plinth and three stepped base,enclosed in iron railings and set on a corner plot with flower beds. The memorial is located at the corner of Bolckow Road and Lee Road.
135 names are commmeorated as havin glost their lives in the First World War.

(This may not be the "R Robson" named on the Grangetown Memorial,
but it is the "best fit". Also, although Newsham is near Thirsk,
there is no "R Robson" on the Thirsk Memorial.)

Son of James and Anne Short, of 35, Vaughan St., Grangetown, Yorks. Born at
Eston, Yorks. Killed 7 August 1916. Aged 31.

Born Eston (Yorks), Enlisted South Bank, Resided Grangetown.
An extract from "The London Gazette," No. 29740, dated 8th Sept.,
1916, records the following:- "For most conspicuous bravery. He was foremost
in the attack, bombing the enemy with great gallantry, when he was severely
wounded in the foot. He was urged to go back, but refused and continued to throw
bombs. Later his leg was shattered by a shell, and he was unable to stand, so
he lay in the trench adjusting detonators and straightening the pins of bombs
for his comrades. He died before he could be carried out of the trench. For
the last eleven months he had always volunteered for dangerous enterprises,
and has always set a magnificent example of bravery and devotion to duty."

His father was Thomas Turnbull (1849–1894). His mother was Charlotte
Eliza Shepherd (1862–1907).
In the 1911 Census he was a steelworker living as a lodger at Farm Cottage,
Grangetown. )
