The Section of the First World War Memorial in Grimsby Minster on which men
of the Yorkshire Regiment are Commemorated

The First World War Memorial for Grimsby is located in a former chantry in
the Minster Church of St. James, Grimsby. The memorial consists of two panels
with gun metal backing, each comprising of twelve sections.
Above the panels are 8 windows in stained glass, and to the left is a panel
dedicating the men of Grimsby who gave their lives in the First World War.
1893 names are commemorated on this memorial.
A larger sized photo of the memorial can be seen on the
Lincolnshire Villages website, and is of suffient resolution to be able
to make out many of the names.

formerly 30772 Notts & Derby Regt. Killed 20 December 1917.
Born Grimsby (Lincs), Enlisted Grimsby.

Private Wilfred Arthur Darnell. 40451. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment, formerly 32227 11th Res Cavalry Regt. Son of Arthur and Frances
Eleanor Darnell, of 112, Lambert Rd., Grimsby. Twice previously wounded in
the Ypres salient. Killed 21 February 1918. Aged 20.

Died 1 July 1916.

Aged 35.

formerly 46354 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Henry and Jane Onn; husband
of Daisy Onn, of 20, Joseph St., Grimsby. Killed 1 October 1918. Aged 33.

Essex. Killed 30 April 1918. Aged 43.

Private Henry Alfred Tooley. TR/5/14118. 11th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment, attached to 4th Battalion Training Reserve. Son of Alfred and Sarah
Jane Tooley, of 213, Convamore Rd., Grimsby.
Died at home 22 March 1917. Aged 18.
Born Oxford, Enlisted Grimsby.

Private George Edward Wilkinson. 34774. 12th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment, formerly TR/5/5909 2nd T R Battn. Only son of Susanah Wilkinson,
of 154, Wellholme Rd., Grimsby, and the late Edward Wilkinson. Killed 11 April
1918. Aged 19.

Private Edmund Wright. 31358. 16th Labour Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Edmund and Elizabeth Wright, of Swaby, Alford, Lincs. Killed
19 October 1916. Aged 39.

Buried STE. MARIE CEMETERY, LE HAVRE.

From the War Diary of the 16th Battalion;-
"Le Havre. Oct 19. No 31358 Pte Wright E No 3 Coy was drowned in the
Quay de Garonne today. He was employed on the Hangar Aux Cotons and at about
9 p.m. went to the quayside to urinate. He appears to have been blinded with
the reflection of light on the water and to have fallen in...........
Le Havre. Oct 28. ..... In accordance with the Court of Inquiry's decision
respecting the danger attending the practice of urinating in the docks......"
