Hart is a village to the North West of Hartlepool.
Inside the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Hart, are two Memorial Windows commemorating those who died in both World Wars. Under the First World War Memorial Window is a wooden plaque, naming 22 men from the village who lost their lives n the war.
Another windows commemorates the names of 6 men who lost their lives in the Second World War.
2 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are named on the First World War Memorial plaque.
Private Charles Alderson, 34839. 6th Battalion King's
Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, formerly 5447 Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 24
April 1917.
Born Skeeby (Yorks), Enlisted Richmond.
Commemorated Panel 108 to 111, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
(There is an element of doubt as to whether this is the same Charles Alderson
as shown on the memorial.
However his mother (after remarrying), Martha Tinkler, died in Hartlepool
in April 1938. A step-brother, Edward Gladstone Tinkler, died aged 62 in West
Hartlepool in 1958. It therefore seems possible that Martha Tinkler moved
from Richmond, - her residence in 1911, to Hart and was resident in Hart when
the names for the memorial were compiled.)
Private William Archibold, 15510. 10th Battalion the
Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 26 January 1916. Aged 24.
Born Little Moorsome, Enlisted West Hartlepool, Resided 83 Chester Rd, West
Hartlepool.
Buried CITE BONJEAN MILITARY CEMETERY, ARMENTIERES.
(William Archibold is shown on the plaque, above, as "William Archibald". However, a check in the 1911 Census shows a William Archibold working as a farm labourer at Glebe Farm in Hart. In the Census the place of birth is given as High Tunstall, Nr Hartlepool, - not far from Hart.)
