![]() |
Henin Crucifix Cemetery is named from a calvary standing on
the opposite side of the road. It was made by units of the 30th Division after
the capture of the village in 1917. Henin Crucifix Cemetery contains 61 burials
and commemorations of the First World War. Two of the burials are unidentified
and eight graves, destroyed in later fighting, are now represented by special
memorials.
Amongst the graves are 13 for soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment. All the
Yorkshire Regiment graves are of men of the 2nd Battalion killed on 2 April
1917. The 2nd Battalion were engaged in a "strong attack" (ref.
Wylly, - History of the Green Howards) on the village of Henin on the morning
of 2 April. In this action, 2 officers and 62 men were killed, with 6 officers
and 96 men wounded and 8 men missing.
