The War Memorial for High Spen (Gateshead) in front of St. Patrick's Church

The War Memorial for High Spen is situated in the churchyard
of St. Patrick's, High Spen, Gateshead.
(The church is actually located some miles South of High Spen, on the B6315
between High Spen and Rowlands Gill.)
The memorial is a cross set on a two stepped base with a square pedestal.The
dedication and commemorations are inscribed on marble tablets set into the
sides of the plinth.
93 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the
First World War, and 35 for the Second World War. The names commemorated are
shown by regiment and date of death.

2 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated
on the memorial.
There is also 1 Green Howard who lost his life in the Second World War who
is buried in the churchyard and commemorated on the memorial.

Private John William Elsdon, 204768. 10th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John William and Charlotte Elsdon, of 56, Watson
St., High Spen, Rowlands Gill, Co. Durham. Killed 7 October 1917. Aged 27.
Born Winlaton (Durham), Enlisted Gateshead, Resided Rowlands Gill (Durham).
