The War Memorial for Hilgay is situated on the High Street in the village. The names of 38 men who served and died during the First World War are commemorated, including one soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.

Private Walter Frederick Carnell. 5/11287.
3rd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, attached to Training Reserve.
Died at home 15 August 1917.
Born Hilgay, Enlisted Atteborough, Resided Hilgay.
Buried HILGAY (ALL SAINTS') CHURCHYARD.

Pte Walter Frederick Carnell's older brothers, William Alfred and George Henry, are also commemorated on the memorial. The former served in the Norfolk Regiment and the latter in the Bedfordshire Regiment.
