The Holme Valley War Memorial is situated in the grounds of the Holme Valley Memorial Hospital on Huddersfield Road in Holmfirth. It consists of a tall column in front of a wall on which there are eight plaques commemorating the names of those who lost their lives in both World Wars. There are 100 from WW2 and 302 from WW1 including at least 3 names of men from the Yorkshire Regiment.

The four soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment, and who are commemorated on this memorial, are;-


Serjeant John Whitehead Atkinson. 20264. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 26 May 1918.
Born Upper Thong (Holmforth, Yorks), Enlisted Huddersfield, Resided New Mill (Huddersfield).
Buried ST. PATRICK'S CEMETERY, LOOS.

Private Robert Henry Froggatt, 79982. Royal Fusiliers Regiment, formerly 38081 of the 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died 11 September 1920 aged 33 years.
Robert Henry Froggatt is not shown in the Commonwealth War Graves Register orin Soldiers Died in the Great War.
From the Imperial War Museum's Lives of the First World War,-
"Robert Henry Froggatt was born on 18 Oct 1887, the third son of William and Emma Froggatt, then living on Stake Lane, Holmfirth. At the time of the 1911 census, Robert was 23 and had been married for less than a year to his wife Beatrice who was born in Langsett. Robert’s occupation then was shown as a domestic coachman, like his father before him.
Robert enlisted in 13 Bn Yorkshire Regiment on 19 September 1916. He subsequently transferred to the Royal Fusiliers. We have no further knowledge of his life or military service.
Robert died at Hill, Holmfirth on 11 September 1920 aged 33 years."

Private Fred Hardy, 38236. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 18 September 1918.
Born Holmfirth (Huddersfield), Enlisted Holmfirth, Resided Holmebridge.
Buried NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY.

Private Frank Swallow. 33550. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 31186 11th Res. Hussars Regt. Killed 15 August 1917.
Born Thongsbridge (Yorks), Enlisted Huddersfield.
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.
