The War Memorial for Houghton-le-Spring

The War Memorial for Houghton-le-Spring is located in the churchyard of St. Michael and All Angels. This can be found where the Broadway in Houghton-le-Spring meets Church Road.
The War Memorial is a Cenotaph standing on two steps. On the right hand side is a soldier carved in half relief, on the left is a sailor, both about 4 feet high. The front of the top is carved to resemble a cross in half relief, with the words “Our Glorious Dead” below. Beneath this, the names are listed in three columns, on both front and back faces in Roman capitals.

Of the 236 names on the Memorial, 23 are those of soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment. Details of these men are shown below.
