The War Memorial for Hunwick (Co. Durham)

The War Memorial for Hunwick is located just inside the gates
of the cemetery in Church Road. The memorial is a simple wheeled cross on
a granite shaft, with a square sided base.
The Hunwick War Memorial is dedicated as follows;-
IN HONOUR
AND TO THE MEMORY OF
THE MEN OF HUNWICK
AND HELMINGTON
WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE
DURING THE GREAT WAR
63 names for the First World War are commemorated on the memorial, of which 7 are for men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment. Details of these men are given below.
24 men who served in the Second World War and who lost their lives are also commemorated on the memorial.

Private Thomas Barraclough. 202070.
5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Brother of Mr. A. H. Barraclough, of
4, Belle Vue, Hunwick, Willington, Co. Durham. Killed 30 March 1918. Aged
34.
Born Roughlea Colliery (Durham), Enlisted Bishop Auckland, Resided Hunwick.
Buried ST. SEVER EXTENSION CEMETERY, ROUEN.
Sapper James Coates. 197785.
255th Tunnelling Coy. Royal Engineers, formerly 19457 the Yorkshire Regiment.
Husband of Hannah Coates, of 8, Low Row, North Beechburn, Howden-le-Wear,
Co. Durham. Killed 31 May 1918. Aged 34.
Born Witton le Wear (Co. Durham), Enlisted Bishop Auckland (Co. Durham), Resided
Howden le Wear (Co. Durham).
Buried LIJSSENTOEK MILITARY CEMETERY.
(Note : The "North Beechburn" is "North Bitchburn" and
is between Hunwick and Howden-le-Wear, though probably closer to Hunwick.)
Private Edward Ellis. 30059.
Depot East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 20430 the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Thomas and Ellen Ellis; husband of Lily Sanderson (formerly Ellis),
of 2, Oxford St., Hunwick, Willington, Co. Durham. Born at Hebburn.
Died at home 5 September 1918. Aged 30.
Born Glasgow, Enlisted North Shields, Resided Tynemouth.
Buried HEBBURN CEMETERY.
(SDGW says born in Glasgow, CWGC says born in Hebburn!)
(Richard Roberts, <richard.nsw@googlemail.com>, examined his service
record (Ancestry.co.uk) which states that his wife was a resident of Hunwick,
and that before enlistment he was a certified schoolmaster.He died from shrapnel
wounds to the head received in action. His 1911 Census entry (before he was
married) describes his occupation as an Assistant Teacher and he was living
in Hunwick.)
Private Robert Lishman Groves. 34733. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment, formerly 70955 D L I. Son of the late John Groves, of Hunwick, Co.
Durham; husband of Florence Groves, of 70, Pendower St., Darlington. Killed
17 October 1918. Aged 38.
Born Hunwick (Durham), Enlisted Bishop Auckland, Resided Howden-le-Wear (Durham).
Buried ROISEL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
Private John Johnson. 19470. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Husband of Sarah Barraclough (formerly Johnson), of 12 Rough Lea Colliery,
Hunwick, Co. Durham. Killed 1 July 1916. Aged 33.
Born Stanhope (Durham), Enlisted Bishop Auckland, Resided Hunwick.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
(Shown in both CWGC and SDGW as residing in "Hunwich".)
Private Arthur Towse. 19705. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed
27 September 1916.
Born Hunwick (Durham), Enlisted Bishop Auckland, Resided Hunwick.

Private William Wright. 41056. 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment
(Prince of Wales's Own), formerly 3698 the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of George and Anne Wright, of Hunwick, Durham. Killed 1 January
1917. Aged 36.
Born Hunwick Lane End (Durham), Enlisted Bishop Auckland.
