The Lych Gate outside the Church of St. John the Baptist, Kirby Wiske, has been dedicated as a memorial to the men of the parish who lost their lives in the First World War. The dedication is on the street-side face of the gate, and the individual commemorations are carved into the inside beams of the gate.

12 members of the parish lost their lives in the First World War and are commemorated on the memorial. Of these 9 were soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment. Inside the church is a family memorial plaque to one of these Yorkshire Regiment soldiers.


Private George Herbert Akers, 200490. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of James and Mary Ann Akers, of New Row, Kirkby Wiske, Thirsk. Killed 19 October 1917. Aged 26.
Enlisted Northallerton, Resided Thirsk.
Commemorated on Panel 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.

Lance Corporal David Brydon. 41592. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 25624 Hussars Regt. Killed 7 June 1917.
Born Kirby Wiske (Yorks), Enlisted Northallerton, Resided York.
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.

Private Joseph Henry Crooks, 34578 9th (Service) Battalion Yorks and Lancater Regiment. Formerly 22788 Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 2 October 1916.

Buried ADANAC MILITARY CEMETERY, MIRAUMONT.

Private John William Garniss. 3873. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 28 May 1916.
Enlisted Northallerton.
Buried BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION (NORD).

Private Norman Douglas A F Marwood. 200280. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 31 October 1917.
Born Kirby Whiske, Enlisted Thirsk.
Buried CANADA FARM CEMETERY.

Private John Earle Pick. 18617. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Thomas O. I. and Eleanor Pick, of Street House, Newsham, Thirsk, Yorks. Was owner of the above farm, and Rector's Warden of Kirkby Wiske. Killed 30 September 1916. Aged 38.
Born Newsham, Enlisted Thirsk, Resided Newsham.
Buried REGINA TRENCH CEMETERY, GRANDCOURT.

Pte John Reed, 18605. 6th Battalion. Killed 27 September 1916.
Born Borough Bridge (Yorks), Enlisted Thirsk, Resided Breckenbrough.
Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private Walter Scaife. 24410. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 2 April 1917.
Born Maunby (Yorks), Enlisted Thirsk, Resided Maunby.
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.

Private George Henry Winter. 220463. 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 5/3319 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 20 October 1918. Aged 26.
Born Thirsk (Yorks), Enlisted Scarborough, Resided Darlington.
Buried ERQUELINNES COMMUNAL CEMETERY.
(George Henry Winter was born in Thirsk in Q1 1892. From the 1901 Census his parents were Peter and Ellen.
He was initially in the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment (No 5/3319) before transferring to the 4th Battalion (No 203203).
The Yorkshire Regiment numbers are given in the Medal Rolls Index.
The Green Howards Gazette reports him, - No 3319, as having been wounded in July/August 1916. His transfer to the 4th Battalion would have been after this, before eventually transferring to the East Yorkshire Regiment.)
