The Town War Memorial in Leyburn is inscribed as follows;-

"This Cross was Erected by the Inhabitants to the Memory of the Men of Leyburn Who Gave Their Lives in the Great War".

The names inscribed on the Memorial are;-

Lance Corporal Alfred Ward Salmon. 241698. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Died at home 16 February 1919. Aged 36.
Resided Leyburn.
Buried DARLINGTON WEST CEMETERY.

L/Cpl Alfred Salmon was a grocer's assistant who worked in Leyburn, but his mother and brother lived in Darlington. He was discharged form the army on 15 April 1918 as a result of wounds. Although his relatives were awarded a commemorative plaque and scroll, he is not listed in the CWGC records.

, 3/9456. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 8 July 1916.
Born Leyburn (Yorks), Enlisted Richmond.
Buried LONDON CEMETERY AND EXTENSION, LONGUEVAL.
(Number = 23433 in SDGW, but 9456 agrees with GH Gazette database).
